In order to enter Peru, there are not
required vaccines, but you should know
what shots you should get depending on the
Peruvian region you will be visiting. If
you are visiting the Peruvian coast,
andes or jungle, you
might get shots for typhoid, tetanus,
diphtheria and hepatitis (Type A for everybody and
type B if you are planning to have
sexual intercourse.) For further

If you will be visiting the jungle at
regions lower than 6000 feet above sea
level, you should get a yellow fever
shot. These vaccination should be
received at least ten days prior to your
visit to the jungle. There is no risk of Malaria in the big
cities but there is risk of Malaria in
the north jungle of Peru (The region of
Loreto). If you are visiting that area,
you should contact your doctor for
further details. In the jungle of Cusco
and Madre de Dios there is a low risk of
Malaria.
If you will be visiting the jungle,
please remember to bring and use over
your skin and clothes an insect
repellent containing 25-50% DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide)
or 20% picaridin.
In Peru, you should not drink tap water
even to brush your teeth. It is not
recommended to eat raw vegetables or
fruit unless you are at a high quality
restaurant or you are sure they have
being disinfected. If you get sick while
in Peru, you will be able to visit a
local doctor for USD 40.00 or even less.
It is possible that visitors get
diarrhea so antibiotics and an
antidiarrheal drug should be brought. Most of the medicine you will need in
case of a stomachache, diarrhea or
common infections do not require medical
prescriptions. You will be able to
purchase medicine from several
pharmacies in the main cities such as
Inkafarma, Fasa, BTL, Arcangel or Botica
de la Salud. Travel insurance is highly
recommended.
If you will be visiting the andes, you
should know that there is a risk of
getting altitude sickness. For more
